The Reporting and Writing intensive here at KEMPA SJW is proving to help newbies and more experienced journalists. Instructor Mike Doyle's class is one of the most popular intensives at camp this year.
Doyle aims to cover the basics of journalistic writing and reporting while also going more in-depth to look at situations that the students might face.
Josh McQuade, senior at Lakes Community High School, came to KEMPA SJW to prepare to join the Talon Times newspaper in the fall.
"I've had no experience with journalism before this week," McQuade said. "I've learned a lot about writing better stories and I'm excited to go out and report for my own story."
While McQuade is getting his first taste of journalism, Eileen O'Gorman from Bradley Bourbonnais High School started becoming interested in journalism in fourth grade. She agreed that the class has been interesting and helpful so far.
"I like how much we get to write, talk about skills and get to use them," Gorman said.
This will be the first year that Gorman's high school will have a newspaper after a two year break due to a lack of involvement. Doyle's class is helping her get back into journalistic writing.
Gorman and her classmates are excited to be able to go out on campus and find stories to write about, allowing them to show off the skills they learned during the past couple of days.
One of her classmates, Zoe Stack, a junior from Wauwatosa West High School, joined the newspaper staff as a sophomore.
"I wanted to hone my skills for reporting," Stack said. "I tend to get really nervous when interviewing...so I really wanted to intensify those skills."
Although she is familiar with some of the skills and techniques that Doyle discussed so far, she said she has also learned a significant amount of new information.
"Some of the stuff I didn't expect to learn, especially about editing, which will be useful next year," Stack said. "It's been a really good class. I was also interested in the photojournalism intensive, but I'm really happy here."
