Hopeful staff member of the new school newspaper at McFarland High School, senior Anna Larson, hopes to “learn how to create the layout of a newspaper so I can help design our school's newspaper next year.” Larson is the layout editor of Driftwood, the school’s literary arts anthology. She is also on student council, the National Honor Society and band. In her spare time she enjoys reading, art and biking.
What do you feel are your journalistic strengths and weaknesses? I'd like to think that I am objective and have good judgement when choosing what is selected. I haven't really had enough journalism experience to really know my strengths and weaknesses, however.
What are you most looking forward to at KEMPA SJW 2016 and why? I am really, really excited about our school creating a newspaper and the opportunity I've been given to learn about how to make it happen. Also, I just love camp experiences in general and can't wait to meet new people and make more friends. Where's the coolest place you've traveled to? Yellowstone National Park.
Third year staff member of Harborside Academy’s yearbook, Chloe Falcon will be a junior editor this upcoming year. During her time at KEMPA she is, “looking forward to coming up with our theme for the yearbook because I'm excited to be a part of the planning process for the book.” Falcon believes her journalistic strengths are designing and making layouts as well as photography.
What are you involved in besides journalism-related things? I don't really do a lot other than yearbook. I read a lot and I am a part of the mentor program at my school.
Where's the coolest place you've traveled to? The coolest place I've ever traveled to was Arizona. Although I'm going to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands in January, so it will most likely change to that.
Who is your favorite artist? (Music or any other form of art) Favorite music artist is Frank Sinatra.
Going into her fourth year on The Legend Yearbook’s staff at Brookfield Central High School, Maria Farrokhnia is now the Editor-In-Chief. Her freshman and sophomore years she started as a section editor, moving up to Secretary and Proofer her junior year, working her way up to EIC for her final year on staff. She is taking the design class at KEMPA to “learn more about how to keep all elements of our publication consistent in both quality and visual appeal.” She is also looking forward to, “being inspired by new creative people and getting a head start on the yearbook while bonding with my assistant EIC.”
What do you feel are your journalistic strengths and weaknesses? My journalistic strengths are that I am confident talking to new people/people I do not know and my journalistic photography is strong. I feel my journalistic weaknesses are in finding a focal point for written features and not writing a generic summary of a sports season.
What are you involved in besides journalism-related things? I am involved in the Junior Statesmen of America as the Vice President of the BCHS chapter, and I am involved in Special Olympics as a Peer Coach during the school year. I’m also very involved in my church youth group and really enjoy mission trips.
Where's the coolest place you've traveled to? Turkey! Istanbul, Kusadasi, Izmir, and Ephesus are incredible cities.
Senior at Wausau West High School, Malorie Ottosen is a staff member of both the magazine and yearbook staffs. She’s been working with the magazine and yearbook for three years now and is going into her second year as Magazine Editor. Although she is involved in her school’s media program, she also said “[I] play clarinet in the band, I compete with science olympiad and forensics, I tutor at an elementary school, I'm involved in a church youth group and write fiction in my free time.”
Which class are you taking at camp? What do you hope to learn? I'm taking Design and hope to be inspired with new styles and trends, learn new techniques and stuff like that.
What are you most looking forward to at KEMPA SJW 2016 and why? I'm most looking forward to learning about design and meeting new people.
What's your favorite movie or TV show? I love the Harry Potter movies, Lord of the Rings/Hobbit. I've been known to binge watch Once Upon A Time on Netflix.
Web Editor-In-Chief of the Lake Zurich High School Bear Facts, Danna Tabachnik, is hoping to further her skills in digital journalism during her time at KEMPA. She is “looking forward to having fun with my staff and just having a good time.” Her junior year she was the Digital Director and worked her way up on staff for an EIC position.
What do you feel are your journalistic strengths and weaknesses? Strengths: telling the full story and incorporating more than just the story. Weaknesses: I'm sometimes afraid to find the story.
What are you involved in besides journalism-related things? I play tennis and guitar.

Antioch Community High School junior Jill Everett is taking on the position of Sports Print Director for The Tom Tom this upcoming year. It is her second year on staff and she feels that, “I need to work on a lot of things like learning how to work InDesign better and writing, along with many other things like photography. I think my strengths are drawing cartoons and such and making a concept for the design of a spread.” Everett is taking the Design class at KEMPA and she hopes to, “learn anything and everything about good designs and layouts.”
What are you involved in besides journalism-related things? I am a three sport athlete. I played volleyball, basketball and track this year and next year I plan to play volleyball, bowling and track. Freshmen year I was on varsity softball, but I just got bored with it, so I threw shot-put and discus this year for the first time and almost went to state. I love being active and learning new things.
What are you most looking forward to at KEMPA SJW 2016 and why? I am looking forward to meeting new people, because I am pretty outgoing and love people. I am also excited to learn more about journalism and design because I know I need to learn more and be better. There is always room for improvement.
Who is your favorite artist? (Music or any other form of art) I don't even know how to describe how much I love music. I listen to it every chance I can, literally whenever possible. I love all types of music except screamo or classical. I seriously don't have a favorite artist because there are so many talented people. I have favorites from every genre: rap, country, alternative etc.
Senior at Edgewood High School in Madison, WI, Gwen Pyeatt is looking forward to holding a leadership position this upcoming year for The Wayfarer, the school’s literary magazine. At KEMPA she is, “looking forward to hanging out with some cool people and gathering some design tips for our literary magazine!” Pyeatt feels that her strengths are “selecting the pieces for the magazine in an unbiased manner.”
What are you involved in besides journalism-related things? I like to run, do nerdy science stuff, read/write poetry (contemporary stuff, Iain S. Thomas and Sarah Kay are favorites), play violin and listen to mostly obscure alternative bands.
Where's the coolest place you've traveled to? The coolest place I've traveled to is probably London this past spring break.
Who is your favorite artist? (Music or any other form of art) The artists I've been listening to most this summer are BORNS, Saint Motel, Cage the Elephant and The Lumineers.
As a sophomore at Appleton North High School, Adison Cole is already thoroughly involved in numerous school activities. From playing tennis to being part of the track team to theatre club, these are just a few of her many talents. She earned two leadership positions, one as a Press Corps Leader for the “Youth in Government” program as well as the digital photography manager position for the school’s newspaper, The Noctiluca. Cole is “looking forward to taking pictures and learning more about taking them” during her time at KEMPA.
What do you feel are your journalistic strengths and weaknesses? I'm really good at taking pictures, conducting interviews, and making articles out of interviews. I'm not the best with other types of articles.
What's your favorite movie or TV show? My favorite tv show is Doctor Who - the new series. My favorite movies are The Three Idiots and Inside Out.
Where's the coolest place you've traveled to? The coolest place I've ever traveled to is Camp Eagle Ridge in Mellen, WI.
